Hi. I joined. I think I am not typical on this site because I really admire his roles he has taken in sci fi, historical adventure and animated films. He brings a nice view of how the often-ignored ( in Hollywood movies, anyway) nice guy next door can be a real hero and someone to admire- kind and strong at the time- someone who is motivated by love to friends and neighbors and whose romantic love comes from a place of friendship and partnership rather than flashy charisma. Hollywood lacks those types of heroes-- and heroines. Nice to see Mr. Sturgess is thinking outside the leading guy box to create a very relatable leading character in movies. I am not so much into fan art, but I did submit a picture that was heavily influenced by Mr. Sturgess but for a different fandom from the ones in his movies-- hope it fits your qualifications.

Hello, I think it will be interesting to submit your illustrations with characters based on Jim Sturgess photos. I'm doing the same when I'm creating my characters, especially one of my characters, I'm trying to show some Sturgess features.
You described his personality really great and I think the same he's very special actor with huge talent and wonderful skills. Wonderful man in my opinion.
Of course I accepted your art, I hope members will read the description, like I did, to understand this art and story.
Thank you for your words!

Thank you for your reply and actually accepting my art submission with an open mind. That actually is interesting you are considering art where people draw characters who are based on Jim Sturgess' features.

I'm glad you found my description of his personality good. I don't know much about him, so I'm mostly going off of interviews and the way he seems to approach his roles. As you may have seen from my DA, most of my stuff is sci-fi, fantasy and comics, so I am an the odder side of this group of admirers. Probably it's because I've been impressed he's been supporting classical adventure movies and science fiction (and one animated movie) for his latest projects. And the sci fi/fantasy is of the more intelligent variety, which is what sci fi was all about in the first place. I am really hoping he is one of a few young actors who will urge movie makers to take more chances on creative, intelligent sci fi, fantasy and animation. I think he's made some quote or other how it's a scary time for movies these days when the major studios only will make certain types of films now (e.g. graphic novel adaptations, remakes, reboots, blockbusters, explosions, etc.) Ironic of me, since i love graphic novels, but the film-makers rarely get them "right" to the tone of the original story.

I actually wonder if, as he gets older and moves more into development behind the camera as well as before, he might become his own variation on a Tom Hanks type of actor-- one who can portray a wide variety of characters and all different physical types, but who execls at playing the ordinary guy, regardless of the genre-- and playing that ordinary guy with a lot of heart. That's especially important in science fiction, fantasy and animation. You're dealing with convincing the audience to believe in new ideas, and you really need a main character who is grounded to "help" the audience understand this world. (Jim actually played that role for Janusz in THe Way Back ). I compare that to a movie like Avatar . It was visually a brilliantly designed world with such amazing wildlife, but the characters-- especially the main protagonist-- seemed remote to me. I didn't feel a part of their world. Hollywood still seems to like the brooding, stone-featured leading guy for science fiction. Heh. Ironically, a few months later, the movie How to Train Your Dragon was released, and it got compared to Avatar , but it was the better movie. The main character was the kind of guy Sturgess plays, but even geekier and with a nasally voice, but he had a lot of heart and courage and warmth-- and a great sense of humor. Even if it was animated, I loved this world and its people much more because the characters were so well made and with a great leading character, and a huge adult fanbase.

Anyway, thanks for the accepting of the image. I sure appreciate. And I have to keep kicking myself to remember the name is spelled S-t-u-r-g-e-s-s. I'm a history buff, too, and there is a rather famous Old West personality named James S-t-u-r-g-i-s involved with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and so that name sticks in my mind for some reason.

I was surprised here on DA was only one group o.0 (and it's dead right now...), so I had to create this one! ^.^

Feel free to join with more of your Jim fanarts!
